QueerFest, Eugene OR August 8th Alton Baker Park

June 13, 2009

Announcing the first annual QueerFest, an alternative to the Eugene Pride celebration.

Sick of wandering around bored eating over priced food amongst life insurance booths? Are you tired of hearing the watered down agenda of the mainstream left being the only opinion voiced regarding the queer movement? Do you think you could do a better job representing your goals and ambitions than sellout politicians, non profits, and lobbyist groups? If you answered yes to any of these questions, join us in our mission to represent an opposition to the diluted coporatization of our radical sexual identities with the first annual QueerFest. Our goals for this year are to create a free space for all people to express and experience their individuality, and give voice to our growing dissatisfaction with the direction of the queer “movement”.

This may come as a shock to some, but not all gays want to get married and raise well adjusted children like our straight counterparts. Not all gays see DADT as the foremost issue needing resolution. More importantly gays and lesbians are not the only members of the queer community who deserve representation in our movement. Our systematic exclusion of the trans community, people of color, queer youth, the poor, the homeless etc., is altogether sickening and needs immediate attention. As of late the message has been loud and clear; if you have money, and are able to effectively blend into mainstream society without offending anybody, then your rights are worth fighting for, if not too bad. No one should have to “straight wash” themselves to gain equality.

In general Pride celebrations have become progressively more banal and pointless with every passing year. They exist now as more of an opportunity for companies to sell us shit we don’t need, than any real expression of the solidarity between a truly proud group of diverse individuals. We should feel pride as a result of our intense struggle to stop the forces in the world whom wish to oppress us and our fellows. We should feel pride in doing it ourselves, and not waiting for the legislative compromises of politicians. We should feel pride when we work for absolute victory, for absolutely everyone.

So join us at the park on August 8th, we’ll be outside the fences of the Eugene Pride cattle pen. Your sexuality is radical; act accordingly!
